AP23485629 “Quality assurance and safety systems of meat and milk of cattle produced in the territories to Semipalatinsk nuclear test site”.
Project Leader
Dyussembaev Sergazy, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor.
Relevance
The Republic of Kazakhstan is one of the countries with a rather tense radioecological situation. For 40 years nuclear tests have been conducted on the territory of Kazakhstan, resulting in negative impact on the environment. It is obvious that natural and anthropogenic radioactivity has a serious impact on the human environment - soil, flora, and fauna, natural waters and the surface layer of the atmosphere All side study and analysis of the ecological system man - society - nature, constant improvement of its functioning are of great importance for the existence of progress of any society.
Goal
Research of meat and milk of cattle on the content of radioactive substances, heavy metals, antibiotics, pesticides, genetically modified organisms, as well as the development of a set of measures to ensure the quality of meat and milk, affecting the quality level of life of the population.
Expected Result
1) There should be at least 2 (two) articles and/or reviews in peer-reviewed scientific publications indexed in Web of Science database in Science Citation Index Expanded and/or in Scopus database with CiteScore not lower than 50 (fifty) percentile; - also, there should be at least 1 (one) article or review in peer-reviewed foreign and/or domestic publications proposed by MSHE RK;
2) Categories of hazardous factors affecting the nutritional and biological value of meat and milk will be identified and a full range of features of livestock products produced in areas adjacent to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site will be presented;
3) A food security monitoring standard and a methodology for calculating this standard depending on the level of environmental contamination and livestock products from adjacent areas will be developed;
4) Optimal methods of research of dangerous biological and chemical agents in meat and milk of cattle, the degree of their compliance with the normative documents of importing countries, WHO, IEB, FAO will be identified, as well as scientifically based recommendations on veterinary and sanitary assessment of meat and milk taking into account international requirements will be developed;
5) It is planned to obtain a Kazakhstani patent;
6) Optimal directions for the development of small and medium-sized businesses in the regions affected by testing at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site will be identified;
7) Recommendations will be developed to determine the safety systems of meat and milk of cattle produced in the areas adjacent to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.
Achieved Result
Complexes of measures for the safety of livestock and crop products produced in the Abai region have been developed.
The studies were conducted in the zones of various radiation risks of the former Nuclear Power Plant of the Abai region: Abaysky (Sarzhal, Karaul) - emergency zone; Zhanasemeysky (Kainar, Abraly, Akbulak) - maximum zone; Ayagozsky - elevated zone; Urdzharsky - minimum risk zone.The levels of radionuclides and heavy metals in cattle meat and milk, as well as their veterinary, sanitary, and physico-chemical properties, were studied.
More significant differences have been identified for heavy metals: in Ayagoz, Zhanasemeysky and Abaysky districts, individual exceedances of MPC for lead, copper and especially zinc (up to 12-13%) were recorded. This indicates local man-made or feed sources of pollution and the need for increased control. Exceedances in cadmium were rare. Veterinary and sanitary examination showed that the organoleptic properties of meat and its chemical composition meet the requirements of high-quality products. The physico-chemical reactions were mostly negative or questionable, which does not indicate spoilage. The analysis of the physico-chemical parameters of the milk confirmed its compliance with the standards; the differences between the districts are mainly related to the conditions of feeding and maintenance. Following the results of the second year, an expanded database on the content of radionuclides and heavy metals was created, the overall radiation safety of products was confirmed in the presence of certain risks for heavy metals, and problem areas were identified for enhanced monitoring. The data obtained make it possible to form scientifically sound recommendations for the safe production and use of livestock products in the territories adjacent to the former Semipalatinsk landfill.
