BR24992916 "Comprehensive historical and archaeological research of the Abay region".
Project Leader
Aitkali Azat, PhD.
Relevance
The Abad region plays a key role in the study of historical and cultural aspects of antiquity and the Middle Ages throughout the country. However, this region has still not received due attention in the framework of archaeological research, despite its potential to explore cultural transformations. The program is aimed at eliminating these gaps in knowledge about the cultural and historical heritage of the Abay region. It is planned to conduct systematic scientific research using modern analytical methods and technologies, which will help to better understand the historical significance of the region and its role in shaping the cultural landscape of Eurasia.
Goal
The Abay region plays a key role in the study of historical and cultural aspects of antiquity and the Middle Ages throughout the country. However, this region has not received due attention in archaeological research despite its potential for studying cultural transformations. The program aims to fill these gaps in knowledge about the cultural and historical heritage of the Abay region. It is planned to conduct systematic research using modern analytical methods and technologies, which will help to better understand the historical significance of the region and its role in shaping the cultural landscape of Eurasia.
Expected Result
The proposed program will provide the following results:
Materials from the Stone Age to the ethnographic time will be collected, digitized, and systematized. Work will be carried out on the search and documentation of monuments for a database of monuments of different times.
Paleolithic and Neolithic sites of settlement will be investigated, complexes of the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age will be studied.
The interrelationships between settlements, burial grounds and sanctuaries will be determined. The funeral rites and the architectural appearance of the archaeological complexes of different times have been reconstructed.
Conclusions will be given on the cultural affiliation and distribution of monuments of the Hunno-Sarmatian era and the Middle Ages.
ethnoarchaeological studies of monuments of the Kazakh time will be carried out; laboratory studies and interdisciplinary analyses of archaeological materials will be conducted.
According to the results of the program, at least 6 (six) articles and (or) reviews will be published in peer-reviewed scientific publications indexed in the Social Science Citation Index or Arts and Humanities Citation Index of the Web of Science database and (or) having a CiteScore percentile in the Scopus database of at least 25 (twenty-five); not less than 8 (eight) articles in journals recommended by the SHEQAC (Science and Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee).
2 (two) monographs will be published, as well as 1 and 2 issues of the serial edition "Set of historical and cultural monuments of the Abay region" dedicated to the city of Semey and the Abay district.
1 scientific catalog for the series "Archaeological Collection of Kazakhstan" based on the stock materials of the historical and local history museum of the Abay region will be published. 2 (two) copyright certificates registered at the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Kazakhstan; 1 scientific conference was organized and held. 2 round tables, 2 summer schools for schoolchildren and young scientists, interviews in the media.
Achieved Result
The collection and structuring of all available materials on the Abai area has been carried out in order to identify those areas where there are gaps in research. Work has been carried out to summarize new archival, library, museum and other sources. Working with sources stored in archives and funds is an essential part of historical, cultural, and scientific research. In this regard, a complex of works has been carried out in institutions where documents of historical, cultural or scientific value are stored. In general, the collected material, namely field reports, diaries, archival records and academic literature covering the period of the stone age to the ethnographic time of the Abai region and adjacent areas, in particular the Karaganda, Pavlodar, East Kazakhstan and North Kazakhstan regions, allowed for a historiographical analysis of individual problems of the studied region. The works of such researchers as Arslanova F.H., Samashev Z., Maksimova A.G., Chernikov S.S., Kiryushin Yu.F., Merts V.K., Alekhin Yu.P., Kuzmina E.E., Grushin S.P., Chernykh E.N., Berdenov S.A., Bartold V.V., Akhinzhanov S.M., Chaloy L.A. are analyzed. and others .
Work has been carried out on the construction of a database of archaeological sites using a geographic information system (GIS). The development was carried out in the ArcGIS and QGIS programs, which have all the necessary functionality for mapping, GIS analysis, as well as the ability to publish maps on the Internet for a wide range of users. An important part was the localization of archaeological sites presented in archival records and academic literature and their inclusion in GIS with a primary description. Various topo- and space maps were used to determine the location of the monuments. The resources of the Google and Bing web platforms turned out to be the most informative for this. Archaeological exploration based on space survey data was carried out on the basis of the QGIS software ver. 3.34.10-Prizren. The topographic maps of OpenStreetMaps and Russian topo maps were used as auxiliary data. The space exploration of archaeological sites consisted of three stages: preparatory, search and verification. To date, the map includes 555 archaeological sites identified in the territory of the Abai region according to archival data and publications: burial grounds, single mounds, sculptures, settlements, parking lots, petroglyphs, mines, accidental finds, etc. As part of the archaeological exploration in the territory of Zhanasemeysky district, comprehensive non-destructive pre-excavation studies (magnetic surveying, orthophotoplanes, topoplanes, digital terrain model, etc.) were carried out at the following archaeological sites: Lenin Memorial settlements (Kokentau archaeological complex), Karatumsyk, Akbieh burial grounds, Borsyk, burial complexes in the valley at the foot of Ushayyr.
Prospecting and exploration work was carried out in the Zhanasemey area to compile a set of historical and cultural monuments of the region, as well as sites adjacent to the named research area. The works are aimed at identifying, fixing new monuments and revising famous archaeological sites from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. During the work carried out, about 30 Neolithic-Eneolithic sites were discovered, among which the sites of Kainar 1-3 and Mastykbai on the eastern outskirts of the Zhaksy Abraly mountains are promising for research. In addition, Stone Age sites such as Kainar 1, 2, Kyzemshek, Duana, Masten, etc. have been identified. There are also five Early Iron Age settlements: Kara-Tumsyk, Kokentau, Kainar, Karasheke and Karasheke-2, located on the northeastern and eastern slopes of the mountains. The monuments of the Bronze Age were presented in the form of funerary monuments and mining sites. The burial complexes of the Early Iron Age were represented by both individual mounds and large burial grounds. More than 50 large burial mounds built of massive stones have been registered.
New data has been obtained from primary sources covering historical periods from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, which makes it possible to significantly expand knowledge about different stages of historical development. Archaeological research work has been carried out on the monuments, covering the periods from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The main purpose of the expedition was to identify, survey and comprehensively study archaeological sites of various chronologies, followed by recording and selecting materials for further laboratory analysis and museum storage. In total, three Stone Age sites (Kainar 1, Kainar 3 (Moldash) and Mastekbai (Zhuzbai)), three fences of the Ushpalak Bronze Age burial ground (monuments No. 75, 76, 78), the Borsyk kurgan group (mound with stone ridges "usami"), the Muzdybai I and Muzdybai III burial grounds (mounds 1, 2, 3, 4 burial grounds of Muzdybai III and emergency burial mound 2 of Muzdybai I), as well as two settlements of the Early Iron Age (Karatumsyk and Karakuys).
Materials have been obtained for reconstructing the lifestyle and social structure of Kazakhs of the past centuries and neighboring ethnic groups. Materials have been obtained that highlight the economic, technological and cultural aspects of their everyday life, as well as changes in material culture over a long period of time.
During the 2025 seasonal research, the ethnoarchaeological group conducted field work in the territories of Urjar, Makanchinsky, Ayagozsky, Abaysky and Zhanasemeysky districts of the Abay region.
