From a scientific idea to a quality article: a foreign professor shared his experience
Dr. Duried Alwazeer, Professor of Nutrition and Nutrition of Turkey's İğdir University, gave a lecture on "From Idea to Article: Research Strategy and Organization" at Şakarim University.
During the lecture for young scientists and PhD students, the scientist focused on the main stages of systematic organization of scientific research from the idea to the finished scientific publication. The processes from the right choice of the research topic to the study of scientific literature, the formation of a research question and hypothesis, the planning of an experiment, the collection and analysis of data were explained with concrete examples.
The professor noted that the effectiveness of research work begins first of all with the ability to ask specific and relevant scientific questions. For the researcher, the novelty of the topic, its practical significance and the possibility of its implementation in a real situation should be evaluated in advance.
Also, effective ways of working with scientific literature and ways of using modern information tools were presented during the lecture. In addition to scientific databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, bibliographic managers such as Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote were shown.
The importance of defining variables during research planning, choosing the right research sample, determining the statistical method before the start of the experiment, clearly developing the research protocol, and conducting laboratory work in accordance with the relevant requirements were widely discussed. The scientist said that the value of scientific results is measured not only by the obtained data, but by the ability to properly analyze, interpret and competently present them to the scientific environment.
The last part of the lecture was devoted to the development and publication of a scientific article. The stages of preparing a manuscript, choosing a journal according to the research direction, submitting the article for peer review and supplementing it according to experts' comments were explained.
The professor told young researchers that scientific work is not limited to personal research, and emphasized the importance of establishing professional contacts with scientific supervisors, colleagues and experts in various fields.
