Shakarim University has improved its position in the world rankings
Shakarim University improved its result in the international UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2026 in the direction of sustainable development. This year, the university took the 526th place among the 2016 higher educational institutions participating from 110 countries of the world, and took the 6th place among the higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan.
In 2025, Shakarim University took 538th place among the world's higher educational institutions and scored 6722.5 points. According to the results of 2026, the university scored 6885 points and rose 12 places. Thus, the overall result increased by 162.5 points.
This increase is taking place in the context of a significant increase in the number of rating participants. In 2025, 1,745 universities from 105 countries participated in the UI GreenMetric rating, and this year, the number of participants reached 2,016 universities, and the number of countries reached 110. That is, the number of higher educational institutions participating in the rating increased by 271 universities or 15.5 percent.
As for the index among Kazakhstani higher educational institutions, Shakarim University took the 6th place this year. Last year, the university was ranked 5th in the national ranking. However, this change does not mean that the university's global index has decreased. On the contrary, Shakarim University improved its position at the international level and increased its final score. The change in the position in the Kazakhstani rating is associated with the rapid improvement of the results of some domestic universities. In 2026, a number of changes were made to the structure of the UI GreenMetric rating, the scoring system was updated and an additional category called GD was introduced. In this regard, a direct comparison of absolute children in 2025 and 2026 in separate categories is not completely consistent from a methodological point of view. Therefore, the final score and the place in the world ranking are considered as the main indicators in the assessment of the overall dynamics of the university.
UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is one of the international rankings that comprehensively evaluates the activities of higher educational institutions in the field of sustainable development. The rating includes indicators of universities such as environmental infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water use, transport system, education and research directions.
The result of Shakarim University in 2026 shows that the work of the university in the direction of sustainable development is progressing at the international level. In the face of increasing number of participants and increasing competition, the 12-step increase in the world rating imposes new tasks on the further development of the university's potential in this direction.
In the future, the university will prioritize systematic improvement of sustainable development indicators, expansion of environmental initiatives, and improvement of efficiency in certain areas of the rating.
