From admission to the first day of school: Shakarim University answered questions from parents and first-year students live
Today Shakarim University held an hour-long online meeting with parents and freshmen. Live, a representative of the university, adviser to the rector MereyErbolovich Shamenov answered questions that are now most of concern to the families of future students for an hour.
The conversation turned out to be much broader than the usual consultations on the work of the admissions committee.
Questions came one after another and concerned almost the entire student’s life system:
completion of enrollment procedures, work of the admissions committee, educational programs, Student houses, terms of settlement, payment and documents, medical requirements, social benefits, organization of the educational process, digital services of the university, adaptation of freshmen and the first days of study.
In fact, in one hour live, the entire route of a person who was an applicant yesterday was covered, and today he is becoming a student at Shakarim University.
This is especially important right now. After the announcement of the results of state educational grants, families' questions change. If just a few weeks ago the main question was “where to go?” and “which educational program to choose?”, now parents ask very specifically: what to do after receiving the grant, where to go, what documents need to be submitted, when to come to Semey, where the student will live, how much the accommodation costs, who is given a place first, how the check-in process works, where to go if a problem arises.
There were also questions that required knowledge of the university’s internal procedures. How do I apply for a place in the Student House? Where is its status tracked? Which categories of students have priority? What supporting documents are needed for children without parental care, students with disabilities and other social categories? What happens if there are not enough places? Is a reserve being formed? Where to contact in case of refusal?
A separate large block dealt directly with living conditions. Parents were interested in the cost of Student Houses in the 2026–2027 academic year, the payment procedure, the possibility of dividing it, check-in dates, internal rules, a list of things that need to be brought with you, and everyday issues that may seem small only until the family sends their child to study in another city for the first time. These are the questions that are recorded in detail in the materials prepared by the university for the live broadcast.
The University presented a specific graph. First-year students move into Student Houses on August 25–28. On August 29, it is planned to move in II–V year students from social categories and foreign students, on August 30–31 — for II–IV year students of the Serpin-2050 program. From September 1, subject to availability, placement of remaining senior students begins.
The package of documents was also examined in detail. In addition to standard documents, the student needs a certificate of study from Platonus, a medical certificate of form 075/u and fluorography. Supporting documents are provided for certain social categories. For foreign students, the list is wider: passport and its translation, medical insurance, vaccination document with translation and other necessary materials.
Moreover, the distribution of students in Student Houses is also organized taking into account the structure of the university and educational areas. The prepared information separately describes the placement of students in STEM education, digital technologies and construction, physical and chemical sciences, food engineering, veterinary medicine and agriculture, business and communications, education, sports and natural sciences Sciences.
But the hostel was only one part of the conversation.
Parents were naturally interested in the university environment itself, which their child is part of. Today, Shakarim University offers 67 undergraduate programs, 49 master's programs and 11 PhD programs. The university has 91 years of history, and the employment rate of graduates is 90%. In international rankings, the university ranks 493rd in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026, is represented in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2026 in the 1501+ group, in THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 - in the range 801–1000, and in UI GreenMetric it ranks 5th among Kazakhstani universities.
Shakarim University today is confidently among the ten strongest universities in Kazakhstan.
And these numbers are important in the context of a conversation with first-year students for one reason: the family no longer chooses only the educational program. She actually chooses the environment in which the young man will spend the next few years.
Therefore, the questions related to what the student will use every day: how to enter Platonus, where to get information about the educational process, how university digital services work, where to go regarding scholarships, accommodation, study, practice and further employment. The Shakarim University website has already collected the main services and areas for students - Platonus, Shakarim Hub, Moodle, library resources, information on the educational process and Student Houses, career opportunities, international programs and other areas of university life.
Shakarim University - admission campaign and official information
It was here that another important side of today's broadcast appeared.
The modern admissions campaign ends far from the admissions committee's desk.
To competently answer the parent of a freshman, today it is not enough for an employee to know the list of documents for admission. He must be familiar with educational programs and academic procedures, understand the system of settlement and social support, know digital services, the timing and sequence of actions of various departments, and be able to explain where a person should turn next.
Moreover, live there is no opportunity to take a question “for later”, to clarify the wording for a long time or to answer with a prepared text. The question comes here and now. It is immediately followed by the next one - from a completely different area.
It is this format that shows the level of university staff better than any formal characteristic.
Merey Shamenov worked for an hour with diverse practical requests from parents and students, switching between issues of admission, accommodation, documents, social conditions and organization of student life. Behind each answer is the work of not just one person, but the entire university system: the admissions committee, academic and administrative departments, staff of student houses, social services, schools and departments, digital services.
This is a fundamental point.
The competence of a university is not demonstrated when a person has no questions. It manifests itself when an issue arises - and the system knows who, how and how quickly should solve it.
August tests such a system for strength especially well. At the same time, enrollment, acceptance of documents, counseling of thousands of applicants and parents, preparation of student houses, allocation of places, organization of the arrival of out-of-town and foreign students, formation of a contingent, preparation for the educational process are underway.
At the same time, for an employee, the next question may be one of dozens during the working day. For a family that sends their son or daughter to study hundreds of kilometers from home, this same question may be the main one.
Therefore, the live broadcast also had a reverse function. It allowed the university to hear exactly where parents' areas of greatest concern are today. If dozens of people are asking the same thing, it's no longer just a repetitive question. This is information for the university itself: where it is necessary to provide additional clarification, change the presentation of information, quickly convey the algorithm of actions or involve the responsible department.
This is how the very concept of the Shakarim University admissions campaign is gradually changing.
It is no longer limited to accepting documents and an order for enrollment. The admissions committee opens this route, but then the entire university is included in it. Because a student not only needs to enroll. He will have to come to a new city, settle in, gain access to digital systems, get to know his school and teachers, understand the schedule, university rules and opportunities, learn to independently solve dozens of new issues.
And it is important for parents to know something else: if such a question arises, their child will not be left alone with him.
Today's hour of live broadcast showed just that.
Shakarim University is entering the final stage of the admissions campaign not only with educational programs, infrastructure and places in Student Houses. Behind all this is a team of people who must be able to quickly navigate the situation, give accurate information, hear the parent and student, and bring the appeal to a specific solution.
Admission ends with an order for enrollment only on paper. For the university, after this, the greatest responsibility begins - to accept yesterday's applicant as its student.
To summarize, it was noted that that the practice of live broadcasts with applicants, students and their parents is not limited to one broadcast. According to him, this format gives the university the opportunity not only to quickly answer specific questions, but also to see which topics require additional clarification, where it is necessary to respond more quickly and improve the work of university services.
- It is important for us that there is no information distance between the student, his family and the university. If there is a question, a person must understand where to turn and get a specific answer. Direct dialogue allows you to hear parents and students and at the same time improve yourself, summed up Merey Shamenov.
