A new milestone for a young scientist: a doctoral student of Shakarim University received the "Generations of Independence" grant
On the eve of the International Youth Day, the tradition of supporting young people striving for education, science and new ideas continued in the region. Akim of the region Berik Wali solemnly handed over the grant "Generations of Independence" to the representatives of the younger generation. Grant holders, representatives of youth organizations and active young people of the region took part in the meeting aimed at supporting youth initiatives.
This year, the "Generations of Independence" grant was awarded in seven directions in Abay region. A total of 74 applications were submitted to the competition. A feature of this year's competition is the introduction of the "Science" and "Ecology" directions for the first time, which allow to support the scientific research of young people.
Aim Leonidova, a second-year doctoral student of the Shakarim University "Technical Physics" educational program, is among the grant recipients.
The young researcher submitted to the competition a scientific project aimed at solving one of the actual problems in the field of heat energy. His project is called "Development and research of thin-layer protective coatings resistant to wear and corrosion applied by electric arc spraying to increase the resource of battery cyclone elements of CHP in Abay region".
The very name of the project indicates its scientific direction and practical significance. Simply put, the research is aimed at extending the life of ash handling units in thermal power plants.
Burning of coal with a lot of ash in general thermal energy facilities accelerates the wear and tear of production equipment. In particular, internal elements of battery cyclones are subject to erosive, corrosive and abrasive effects. Such wear and tear over time affects the efficiency of the equipment, requiring additional costs for repair or replacement.
The way to solve this problem through material science and modern technologies is considered in the research of Ms. Bauyrzhanovna. The scientist studies the microstructure of the samples taken from the used battery cyclone, the depth of corrosion and erosion, and determines under what conditions and to what extent the material wears out.
One of the main innovations of the research is the formation of a protective coating in the form of a very thin layer. It is intended to create a wear-resistant coating with a thickness of about 150-300 micrometers using electric arc spraying technology. A thin layer is important here. Because applying too thick a coating to the internal channels of the cyclone can change the aerodynamics of the gas flow and adversely affect the normal operation of the unit.
Therefore, although the research of a young scientist seems simple at first glance, behind it is a complex scientific task aimed at solving a real industrial problem.
In the course of project implementation, several important stages are envisaged.
"The project has several tasks. First, it is necessary to take laboratory samples from the delivered used battery cyclone section and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the nature of the failure. Secondly, it is important to justify the composition of the wires used, taking into account the adhesive compatibility with Steel 3. Thirdly, it is intended to optimize the parameters of electric arc spraying to obtain thin coatings with a thickness of 150-300 micrometers. Fourthly, we will test the microhardness, adhesive strength and abrasion resistance of the obtained coatings in laboratory conditions," says Aym Bauyrzhanovna.
According to the young scientist, the ultimate goal of the research is to propose a technological solution that will not only extend the service life of equipment in thermal energy facilities, but also reduce production costs.
From this point of view, the "Generations of Independence" grant is not only a personal achievement of a young researcher, but also an important opportunity for a scientific idea to open its way to practice. Especially this year, the introduction of the "Science" course for the first time within the framework of the competition gives a new impetus to the search of young scientists in the region.
The success of Aym Leonidova, who is studying and conducting scientific research at Shakarim University, is a manifestation of the increasing interest of university youth in science.
