The archaeological heritage of the Abay region is included in scientific circulation

December 24 in Almaty, in the conference hall of the Archaeological Institute named after A.Kh. Margulan, held a round table on the topic: “Archaeology of the Abay region: interim results, new data and directions for development.”

The scientific meeting was attended by leading scientists and young researchers from Shәkarim University, Archaeological Institute named after A.Kh. Margulan, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana, as well as Nazarbayev University.

The event was organized within the framework of the program-targeted funding project of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan BR24992916 “Comprehensive historical and archaeological research of the Abay region.” The round table was held jointly by Shakari University and the Archaeological Institute named after A.Kh. Margulana.

The main purpose of the meeting was to analyze the intermediate results of archaeological research conducted in 2025 in the Abay region, introduce new scientific data into scientific circulation and determine current directions for the development of regional archeology.

During the round table, informative reports were presented, covering a wide chronological range from the Stone Age to the ethnographic period. The use of digital technologies in documenting and preserving archaeological heritage, modern methods of geomatics and digital archeology were also widely discussed.

In the discussion part, the participants paid special attention to the systematic addition of the archaeological map of the Abay region, a comprehensive study of newly identified monuments, as well as the introduction of traditional folk knowledge of the Kazakh people into scientific research using interdisciplinary approaches. In addition, the need to ensure wide availability of the results obtained through scientific publications and digital platforms was noted.

Following the results of the round table, specific proposals were formulated for continuing the systematic and targeted study of the archeology of the region, improving the scientific quality of field and laboratory work, as well as for the wider involvement of the Abay region in scientific projects.
