International Forum on Nuclear Safety Issues
From September 23 to 25, 2026, Shakarim University hosted Semey Forum 2026, the annual meeting of the Women in Nuclear Central Asia (WINCA) network, dedicated to promoting nuclear safety, the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and regional cooperation.
The forum brought together experts, scientists, representatives of international organizations, higher education institutions, and professional communities from Central Asian countries and other nations.
Following the results of the international essay competition, Akbota Khazhidinova, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Technical Physics and Heat Power Engineering, won first place. Her essay received high recognition for its substantive content, in-depth analysis, and the relevance of its ideas concerning nuclear safety, the peaceful application of nuclear technologies, and regional cooperation.
The participation of Madiyar Maratbekov, a first-year student of the Technical Physics educational program, deserves special attention. From the very beginning of his studies, he demonstrated an interest in current issues in nuclear energy and had the opportunity to participate in an international expert forum. Attending presentations by leading national and international specialists marked an important step in his professional development and broadened his scientific outlook.
The participation of both a lecturer and a student from the Department of Technical Physics and Heat Power Engineering in Semey Forum 2026 demonstrates the continuity of scientific interests and the active involvement of students in the professional community from their first year of study.
The forum and the participation of university representatives contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
– SDG 4 «Quality Education» – expanding educational opportunities, developing professional competencies, and engaging students in international scientific and educational cooperation.
– SDG 5 «Gender Equality» – supporting the professional and scientific potential of women in the nuclear sector and strengthening their role in science, technology, and engineering education.
– SDG 7 «Affordable and Clean Energy» – promoting scientific dialogue on the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy as one of the pathways toward sustainable energy development.
– SDG 17 «Partnerships for the Goals» – strengthening international and regional cooperation among universities, research institutions, and professional communities.
Semey Forum 2026 served as an important platform for professional dialogue, knowledge exchange, and strengthening international cooperation in nuclear safety and the peaceful use of atomic energy. The participation of Shakarim University representatives highlights the university's commitment to developing scientific potential, supporting young researchers, and promoting the principles of sustainable development.
