On the eve of the decade of science, the issue of assigning a new status to Kurchatov was discussed
On the eve of the Decade of Science in the city of Semey, an important meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council was held under the chairmanship of the regional akim Abai Berik Uali and with the participation of the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek. The main issue on the agenda was the assignment of the status of a “Scientific Town” to the city of Kurchatov in accordance with the instructions of the Head of State
The meeting was attended by representatives of the region’s scientific community and heads of higher educational institutions. Among them is the rector of Shakarim University Duman Orynbekov.
The city of Kurchatov is historically distinguished by its unique scientific and innovative infrastructure. In order to further develop this potential, a comprehensive development plan for 2025–2029 has been developed.
Within the plan:
76 large investment projects with a total value of 1.1 trillion tenge will be implemented;
provision is made for the construction of a 700 MW power plant and a coal chemical complex;
More than 6 thousand new jobs will be created, and the city’s engineering, social and housing infrastructure will be completely modernized.
These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the relationship between science, business and production, as well as the development of innovative enterprises.
The role of the university in the development of regional science
During the meeting, strategic directions for the development of the scientific potential of the Abay region were widely discussed.
In his speech, Duman Orynbekov noted the significant role of Shakarim University in the development of regional science. Currently, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, more than 40 scientific projects are being implemented at the university. More than 70% of them are applied research aimed at solving specific production problems.
Key strategic priorities of the university:
digitalization of the agricultural sector and the introduction of domestic breeding achievements into production to ensure food security;
development of modern scientific infrastructure with a full cycle “from science to production” (Shakarim Lab, Agrotechnopark, etc.);
creation in 2026–2028 of an academic and research center, which will become the core of the region’s agro-industrial complex.
